 Exciting News!  Dr. Rodney Guiseppi, a young ophthalmologist currently based in Texas but hailing from Trinidad, will be at OSWI this July! Dr. Guiseppi recently presented at the 2024 annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), held in Seattle, WA.

 Topic: Dr. Guiseppi’s presentation delved into the “Impact of Preferred Practice Pattern Guidelines in the Ischemic Workup of Retinal Artery Occlusion in the Emergency Department.”

 About the Study: This follow-up study assessed whether patients diagnosed with retinal artery occlusion in the emergency department were being evaluated as per the guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) in the USA. The guidelines suggested a comprehensive stroke evaluation, including brain imaging, carotid artery imaging, and cardiac evaluation.

 Study Findings: Dr. Guiseppi’s study revealed that since the AAO published its guidelines, there has been an improvement in the evaluation of patients with retinal artery occlusion in the USA, rising from 5% to 25%. However, the majority of patients still did not receive a complete stroke evaluation in the emergency department.

Dr. Guiseppi’s research sheds light on the importance of adherence to guidelines and the need for continued efforts to ensure comprehensive evaluation and care for patients with retinal artery occlusion. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Guiseppi to OSWI and learning more about his groundbreaking work!
